It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness

It was 9 years ago when a group of students of high school started with a not so very common project for kids our age, or for those at our school. We created Group 42 of Amnesty International, Mexican Chapter.

As we learned about AI we became totally committed to its values and objectives and were v. excited about taking action, participating, being part of huge international Human Rights organization.

We worked in several topics and cases to free prisoners of conscience, ensure fair trials for political prisoners, protect refugees, abolish the death penalty, end political killings, “disappearances” and torture, and bring to justice those responsible for human rights violations. At the time of organizing debates and conferences for our classmates.

By participating in this project we all reaffirmed our conviction and appreciation for human life and dignity, we also learn the value of reciprocity and international solidarity.

I can remember several special moments while leading this project for example when we met Mr. Pierre Sane -AI General Secretary- while he was visiting Mexico and were able to exchange points of view with him and other members of the secretariat.

But the top moment was that Urgent Action when we gather more than 3,000 signatures to prevent that day Ramon Martinez Villareal a Mexican inmate in Arizona of being executed. I can remember that day sending with my team this huge fax from this small office in Mexico State Campus to the authorities of Arizona. I don't know if it was because of our effort or any other
reason, but Martinez Villareal could live for that day.

All my respect to and gratitude to Mr. Peter Benson for giving the world hope and to this group of high school kids and the almost two million members around the globe the opportunity of fighting for an ideal and for changing the way in which we perceived and live life. Mr Benson will continue to be an inspiration. Posted by Hello
